Ferns on Grande Île

The vegetation found in wetlands must withstand spring flooding. It is characterized by plants adapted to land covered with water, and, later in the season, waterlogged land.

At the base of the silver maple grove of Grande Île, lies an impressive carpet of ferns, giving the scene the luxuriant appearance of a tropical forest.

As it is rather shallow, Lake Saint-Pierre is covered over large areas by common water lilies and yellow pond lilies. When the current is stronger, whole plants, or parts of plants (rhizomes) break away and are carried away to start new colonies elsewhere.

Larger blue flag irises with their silky violet colouring, and yellow irises with their brilliant petals can be seen like bouquets at every turn in the channels.

A large number of intertwined stems often block the passage of boats. Since many places are hard to reach, they are preserved in an almost completely natural state.

The stumps of dead trees along the river are used as perches, shelters, or as breeding and feeding areas for many insects, birds, and mammals. Under the piled-up branches, amphibians and reptiles can hide.

Hole at the base of a silver maple

This hole at the base of an impressive silver maple surely provides shelter to some animals.

The  silhouettes of silver maples and cottonwoods are traced like cutouts on the horizon.

Among the large trees bending in calm majesty over the water can be found a variety of willows.

Many species of plants that are considered threatened, such as dragon-root, live in these wetlands. For instance, we can glimpse this plant near the pathway of the “Sentier d’interpretation de la baie de Lavallière”.

The aquatic plant communities, marshes, and swamplands of Lake Saint-Pierre comprise a varied and plentiful vegetation.
