Sunrise on the archipelago

During the hot season, wetlands release surplus water accumulated during spring floods.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The water that was conserved by wetlands helps replenish the groundwater table, thus helping maintain reserves of drinking water.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This environment provides several habitats, thus resulting in a widely diversified fauna.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vegetation growing on the riverbanks prevents excessive warming of the water. This ensures proper oxygenation, prevents the disappearance of certain animal species, and protects against the proliferation of algae and other unwanted aquatic plants.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Towards the end of summer, when water is at its lowest level (low water mark), some marshes and swamps can dry up.  What would normally be water-covered surface is invaded by vegetation and transformed into an aquatic plant community.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In August, swamps are covered with lush vegetation.
