Hermes the great blue heron basking in the south in winter

During winter, the plumage of adult herons becomes drabber.

Some of them spend winter in the southernmost parts of Quebec, and in the southern part of the Maritimes, especially in Nova Scotia. They are only limited by their need to have access to ice-free zones so they can fish.

Most Great Blue Heron spend winter in the southern United States.
