Cows in the community pasture on Île du Moine

Land bordering Lake Saint-Pierre and its tributaries is mostly used for agriculture.

At the western end of Île du Moine, many livestock farmers bring their animals to graze together, from spring until fall. This tradition, called “la commune”, dates back to the early times of the colony, under French seigniorial regime. Cows and their calves are brought over on a barge towed by a steel cable.
