Snowshoe hare

Some mammals continue to be active during the winter season.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Eastern Chipmunk awakens from a lethargic, sleeplike state from February or March on.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Red squirrel chooses the warmest moments of the day to venture outside its nest.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To better face the onslaught of cold weather, the Northern flying squirrels gather in groups.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though they are usually solitary animals, American porcupines also gather together in cold weather.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Snowshoe hare’s coat turns almost completely white in winter. Thus, the animal blends in with its snowy surroundings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The White-tailed deer manages to find its food on the ground when the snow cover isn’t too deep. Otherwise, it feeds on twigs, bark, and buds.
