Commercial fishermen’s stakes in a channel

For over one hundred years, commercial fishing has taken place in Lake Saint-Pierre. Conventional equipment includes “verveux”, funnel-shaped nets called hoopnets that are tied to poles in shallow water.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main sought-after species for commercial fishing are Yellow perch, Lake sturgeon, American eel, and Brown bullhead. Lake whitefish, carp, Pumpkinseed, Burbot, White sucker, and Long-nose sucker are also fished. Crayfish (a crustacean) can also be captured in the nets during springtime and fall.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sport fishermen seek out Yellow perch, Walleye, Sauger, Northern Pike, and Brown bullhead.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to maintain stocks of Yellow perch, the fishing season has been delayed, and the minimum size of each fish caught has been increased. The number of fish one is allowed to catch has been decreased.
