View of a channel in the Lake Saint-Pierre archipelago

Nearly 70 % of Quebec’s freshwater fish species can be found in Lake Saint-Pierre.

Some species of fish such as Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and Brown Bullhead spawn in the flood plain during spring floods.

The increased presence of microorganisms, due to the rapid warming of the water, constitutes an easy source of food for the newly-hatched fish. When the waters recede, the young fish return to the river.

Wetland vegetation retains particles that would normally be in suspension in the water. Thus the water is filtered and clearer, avoiding obstruction of the gills of the fish.
