Floating islands of vegetation are carried by the current. Originally part of the aquatic water communities, these masses were torn away by the waves of cargo ships.
The water draught of these enormous ships creates huge wake waves that eat away at the banks of the islands, carrying away fine sediment.

Almost half of Lake Saint-Pierre, south of the Seaway, was used by the Canadian Army as a shooting practice area from 1952 to 2000. Nearly 300,000 projectiles, some of which are potentially explosive, lie at the bottom of the lake. This explains why this part of the lake is prohibited to boaters, fishermen, or hunters, but consequently providing a shelter for wildlife. |
