Cottages on piles along the channels

In times of yore, many islands were inhabited all year long. Some barns had thatched roofs made out of prairie cordgrass. This oily hay was gathered on the riverbanks after the first frosts.

In winter, people can cross the river on ice bridges. After the inauguration of the Seaway in 1953, the islands were gradually deserted. Cabins on pilings replaced the former dwellings.

The Town of Sorel-Tracy is located on both banks of the Richelieu River. The river has its source in the United States, in Lake Champlain, and joins the Saint Lawrence River at Sorel-Tracy.

At the end of Lake Saint-Pierre, the Saint Lawrence resumes the appearance of a river, and is overlooked by the Laviolette Bridge in Trois-Rivières.
